Mindfulness Therapy
Mindfulness is new and popular approach in helping one overcome anxiety, stress and depression. It uses techniques from meditation, along with tools from cognitive therapy. The two most popular modalities are called Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (MBCT).
It encourages the clients to become more aware of their present reality and consists of a series of exercises that allow one to pay attention to the present in a non-judgmental way. One is encouraged to observe without evaluating or judging one’s internal experience or perception. By being curious, open and accepting it helps to understand thoughts and feelings and learn that one is greater than their thoughts and feelings.
It can lead to an improvement in emotional regulation, reduce rumination or circular thinking and create internal space for more constructive thinking. In addition, by teaching the client mindfulness-based techniques it can help one gain a sense of control over their experience.
